Gavin Griffin was born in Darien, Illinois on August 28, 1981. He spent four years studying at Texas Christian University in Forth Worth, majoring in Speech Pathology. He worked as a poker dealer but has since become a professional poker player.

When he was just 22, he became the youngest player to ever win a WSOP gold bracelet, which he did in the $3,000 Pot-Limit Hold’em event on May 14, 2004, going home with $270,420. Gavin triumphed over a field of 316 players, many of them seasoned, respected professionals. The player Gavin knocked out in heads-up play was Gary Bush.

When asked why he thinks increasing numbers of younger players are winning big in tournaments, Gavin said this: “Practice, practice, practice. So many of us have put in thousands and thousands of hours online. We can build experience at an incredible rate, which causes players to be better at a younger age than ever before.”

Gavin is as humble as he is sagacious when giving advice to wannabes, “I don’t know if I’m qualified to give tips to beginners, but the best tip I can give anyone is to play within your bankroll, but allow it to grow. In other words, take a shot at a higher game when the conditions are good, but don’t be worried about always playing the biggest game in the room. Worry about getting into the game that gives you the best earning potential.”

When asked how long it would have taken him to dump his girlfriend and take up with Famke Janssen had he been Matt Damon in “Rounders,” Gavin said, “I don’t think they measure time in increments that small.”
